Buffalo Leading the way in NYS Construction Infrastructure Projects

Buffalo, New York, is on the cusp of a transformative project: replacing the Scajaquada Expressway with a parkway and boulevard. This initiative, spearheaded by the Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC) in partnership with Stantec, aims to mend the divisions created by the expressway and revitalize a historic greenway envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted. The plan focuses on reducing the number of travel lanes and introducing green spaces, bicycle paths, and pedestrian walkways.

The current expressway has negatively impacted the mobility and overall quality of life in the neighborhoods it bisects. Data reveals that most local trips are short, and the expressway primarily serves suburban commuters. By shifting the focus to local needs, the project seeks to improve connectivity and enhance the urban experience for residents.

The proposed design includes reducing travel lanes from four to two and creating a multiway boulevard with both local and central lanes. This will facilitate smoother traffic flow while accommodating local access. The plan also prioritizes the restoration of Scajaquada Creek, aiming to enhance the natural environment and create a more sustainable urban landscape.

Beyond traffic and environmental considerations, the project emphasizes community integration. Upgrading intersections, improving connecting roadways, and establishing mobility hubs are integral to the plan. These improvements will create a more cohesive and accessible city for all residents.
By reframing the planning process with a local perspective and utilizing data to address traffic concerns, the project strives to establish a shared vision. This vision encompasses various aspects of urban life, including health, equity, recreation, and environmental quality, ensuring a holistic approach to urban development.

The Scajaquada Expressway transformation represents a significant step towards a more connected, sustainable, and vibrant Buffalo. By prioritizing community needs and environmental restoration, this project promises to enhance the quality of life for current and future generations.
